Filipino Recipes – Lumpia Shanghai Recipe – Pinoy Food

The Filipino culture is a mixture of several races that inhabited the islands. Chinese migrants introduced this recipe to the Filipinos and until the present times, it still remains a favorite in many Filipino households. There are other lumpia (egg roll) versions but the fillings for the lumpia shanghai is meat for the most part. Pork, beef or a combination of both can be used. This is a delightfully delicious recipe and great for parties as finger food.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound ground pork
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- 1 carrot (grated)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 2 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 1 1/2 quarts oil for frying
- 1 (16 ounce) package spring roll wrappers
Cooking Instructions:
- Place the ground beef, ground pork, carrot and onion in a large mixing bowl. You can mix the ingredients thoroughly if you use your hands for kneading.
- Blend in the salt, garlic powder, black pepper and soy sauce little by little. Continue kneading until all ingredients are distributed uniformly.
- On a flat surface, lay out a few wrappers. At the center of the wrapper, place 2 tablespoons of the filling, forming a line. The filling should only be about the size of your thumb for faster cooking.
- Fold the top edges to the center. Then fold the left and right sides towards the center as well. Then roll toward the remaining bottom edge and seal the roll by moistening the last edge of the wrapper. Repeat the process with all of the wrappers.
- Place oil in a heavy pan then place under medium high heat. When the oil is hot, fry 4 or 5 lumpia at a time. Turn once and fry for 3-4 minutes or until the wrapper turns golden brown. You will know the lumpia are already cooked thoroughly when they float.
- Serve with dipping sauce. You can use banana ketchup, sweet and sour sauce or soy sauce with lemon.
Pinoy Food – Chopsuey Recipe – Filipino Recipes

Chopsuey is one of the all-time favorites in every Filipino household. The delicious blend of the flavors makes this dish truly mouthwatering. It is a must for every “salo-salo” or small gathering as well as big parties. This is not only delightful and yummy, but healthy as well. You have veggies, seafood and pork, all in one recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 kilo poultry liver and gizzard (sliced into small pieces)
- 1/4 kilo shrimps (shelled, deveined and halved)
- 1/4 kilo pork (diced into small pieces)
- 1/4 kilo cabbage (cut into squares)
- 1/4 kilo snow peas (sitsaro)
- 1/4 kilo string beans
- 1/4 kilo cauliflower (broken to bite size)
- 1 piece green bell pepper (cut in strips)
- 1 piece red bell pepper (cut in strips)
- 1 carrot (sliced thinly)
- 2 onions (diced)
- 5 cloves garlic (diced)
- 3 stalks celery (cut into 2″ long pieces)
- 2 stalks of leeks (cut into 2″ long pieces)
- 4 tablespoons corn oil or vegetable oil
- 3 tablespoons patis (fish sauce)
- 3 tablespoons sesame oil
- 2 cups chicken stock (broth)
- 2 tablespoons of cornstarch (mixed with 1/4 cup of water)
- Salt to taste
Cooking Instructions:
- Sauté the onions and garlic in a big skillet. When the lightly browned, add in the chicken liver, gizzard and pork. Pour in 1 cup of stock and add a pinch of salt. Simmer for about 15 minutes or until the chicken giblets and pork are already well cooked.
- Add the shrimp then mix in all the vegetables. Pour in the dissolved cornstarch, patis and the remaining 1 cup of stock. Under medium-low heat, cook until the vegetables are done, takes about 10 minutes. Then add the sesame oil.
- Add salt and pepper for flavor.
- Serve with rice while hot.
Pinoy Food – Pansit Canton – Filipino Recipes

There is a superstition that pansit (or noodles) can add to one’s long life. That is why pansit is commonly served during birthdays. It is also a typical dish prepared during special occasions like weddings and holidays. If you are a noodle lover, you will surely be delighted with this pancit canton recipe which is truly a satisfying and delicious treat. You do not have to wait for a special occasion to try this dish.
Ingredients:
- 12 ounces pansit canton noodles
- 1/2 pound shrimps (shelled and deveined)
- 4 cups chicken broth (from boiled breast)
- 1 chicken breast (cooked and shredded)
- 1/2 pound pork (sliced into small pieces)
- 1/4 cup diced scallions
- 1 carrot (diced)
- 1 cup sliced celery
- 2 cups cabbage (sliced into strips)
- 2 cups snow peas (sitsaro)
- cauliflower (cut into bits)
- 1/2 cup sliced Chinese sausages
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 4 tablespoons cooking oil
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 4 tablespoons soy sauce
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
Instructions:
- Heat oil in a big pan then sauté the onions and garlic. Add the sliced pork and cook until pork is well cooked.
- Pour in 2 cups of chicken broth. Add the shrimps, shredded chicken, sliced Chinese sausages, diced carrot, celery, cabbage, and the snow peas. Simmer until cooked, takes about 10 minutes.
- Pour in the remaining 2 cups of chicken broth then add the pancit canton noodles. Simmer until the noodles become soft.
- Add the sesame oil and scallions. Add salt and pepper for flavor.
- Serve while hot.
